Remember we said we were going to continue with the rest of the list from last week today. So here's the remaining part of the list and if you didn't read up the first part of this post click here to do that.
This Japanese cult translates to "Supreme truth". This cult was founded by Shoko Asahara in 1984. Under the cover of yoga and meditation this group was granted religious status and then became increasingly dangerous afterwards. In the years that followed Asahara and his followers were accused of fraud, forced donations and murder. In 1995 the police had started to take a serious look into Asahara's activities and tbese accusations, so much so that Asahara ordered that sarin gas be released into the subway system to distract the authorities, the resulting fallout was devastating but the police managed to apprehend Asahara and discovered a massive stockpile of weapons, live captives and explosives. Among the materials discovered was gas enough to wipe out four million people, a Russian helicopter and chemical weapons like anthrax. Asahara was arrested and improsoned and his cult disbanded.
4. Order Of The Solar Temple
This strange cult is based upon the ancient belief that the knights templar still exist and that slavation is only available to converted worshippers. Like the just mentioned cult above (number 5) this cult was also formed in 1984 by Joseph Di Mambro and Luc Jouret. This groups activities are extremely secretive, but 1994 this groups memebers brutally murdered an infant beacuse they believed it to be the anti-christ. What followed after was a series of suicides, to be exact mass suicides (one In Switzerland where inner-circle members were poisoned to death, a second one in Canada.) Cultists were shot, poisoned, burned and suffocated. Òver 100 people died in the end, mostly by their own hands or at the hands of their leaders.
3. The People's Temple
Thjs grouo was founded by Jim Jones, a former marxist and methodist pries. Jones was known for speaking out against the social elites so the poor people and downtrodden flocked towards him. Witntime what started out as an innocent movement became something else entirely. Jones started speaking out against the bible and became more paranoid of nuclear catastrophe. Jones was forced to leave the United States and settke in Guyana, but there was still complaints of sexual abuse. Things beacane worse when his followers assassinated a US congressman. What followed after was historical as 900 people (his followers) committed suicide, the largest in history, on the order of their leader by drinking poison-laced Kool Aid hence coining the term "driniking the Kool Aid".
2. Branch Davidians
Founded by David Koresh, Koresh taught/encouraged his followers that anyone not aligned with him, especially the united states, was an enemy of God. He had claimed to be a voice of God even the Messiah. This was your typical doomsday cult built on lies and blind faith. Koresh used his power to enegage in sexual activities with his female followers. He moved his followers to a compound ( a massive one) outside Texas. The authorities started an ivestigation in the compound after charges of sexual assault and chikd molestation were leveled against Koresh and his cult. In a particular standoff in '94 teargas was fired into thecompound by the ATF. Fires erupted from the building, nobody is sure how the fires started in the end 76 people died as a result of the chaos.
1. Heavens Gate
This one is particularly interesting for me. Followers of this cult believe that salvation and enlightenment can only come by fleeing earth before the 'great recycling'. Since "leaving earth" is somewhat problematic/tough leaders of this cult taught that suicide was the answer to leaving your body and attaining enlightment. The leaders of this cult being Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles prepared videos on how to leave your body behind and attain enlightenment. In 1997 when Haley's comet arrived, Applewhite preached that there was a spaceship trailing the comet and only those who followed him into death would be saved. After he had preached that Haikey's comet was the sign they'd be waiting for waiting for Applewhite ordered 38 people to commit suicide
